Why re-create the wheel, spin-your-wheels, or struggle alone?

 

Watching some of my loved ones needlessly suffer taught me to be proactive with health and to listen to others who say that something in their body just doesn't feel right. Two examples and an unexpected takeaway:

 

 

My Mom grew up coming home from school to a "lonely house" because her single-parent mom had to Woman Hurting CROPPEDadult-annoyed-anxiety-133021work. So, as soon as she could, Mom chose to be a stay-at-home mom. One day when I was young, I came home to find an embarrassed, irritated Mom upset with her doctor. She'd asked for help because she'd been waking up tired, gaining weight, etc. He looked at her and said, "You're bored. Get a job." Months later, Mom returned to that doctor with a magazine article that listed her symptoms and suggested they pointed to thyroid problems. Her doctor "humored her," had her tested and learned that, by that time, her thyroid no longer functioned. Years of thyroid medication followed because "something's wrong" went unheeded.

 

 

Next, when my son was about 5 years old, I would pick him up from school and could see he was hurting. He would Child Young hurting CROPPED adorable-baby-blond-hair-1697849slump into his car seat, his eyes looking exhausted and uncomfortable. A 5-year old with no energy for weeks? Multiple trips to the pediatrician who would look at him and tell us, "There's nothing wrong, just watch him." Then they started treating us like hypochondriacs—until several months later when school called to come get our son whose knee had swelled to the size of a softball. We learned it was a manifestation of Lyme disease, which is what he'd had all those months we were told "nothing's wrong" when we could see there was.

 

 

The unexpected takeaway? DON'T turn your backs on doctors; there are many wonderful, helpful doctors and healthcare professionals. Today most Doctors are pressed & stressed to see so many patients that they get to spend very little time with any one of them. Patients can leave feeling rushed, unheard, confused. But DO get personalized guidance that empowers you with more control over your health and wellness and to more effectively partner with doctors and other healthcare professionals for better two-way communications and results. That's just one way I can help you both.

 

As a Health & Wellness Coach, I can:

  • Help you be prepared to have good, productive conversations with your doctor.
  • Guide you to become better-versed on what your body is trying to tell you. For example, cravings are the body's way of telling you what needs to be addressed. A craving can be due to non-food issues like, for one example, a lack of restful sleep. Cravings should be correctly considered, not ignored.
  • Guide you to information, resources, activities, and learning to enhance your life and wellbeing.
  • Sometimes, knowing what to do isn't quite enough to allay concerns or reach goals. So as a Health & Wellness Coach, I also offer supportive encouragement and accountability techniques to bolster your determination and perseverance.
  • Coach you to discover unknown obstacles and eliminate known obstacles that are getting in the way of your success to better wellbeing.
  • Spend time helping you learn to figure out what food and lifestyle choices you specifically need to do (or not do) to keep or improve your wellbeing.
  • Cover multiple topics: stress, sleep, digestive discomfort, longevity strategies, and much more... 

Each person is a blend of both common characteristics (e.g., need oxygen, water, food, sleep) plus their own particular needs (e.g., some feel better as vegetarian vs. others need meat). The competing contradictory advice out there and hurried stressful lifestyles leave many people feeling "not quite right" and confused about what to do that will work for them. One example: some people gain weight because they're not getting enough sleep while others may have a medical condition and yet others are eating the wrong-for-them foods. What works for one person may or may not work for another. I believe in seeking and rectifying your underlying cause, not just masking the symptoms.

 

You are worth a professional ally to coach, encourage, and guide you to:

  • better partnerships with your doctors and other healthcare professionals,
  • better knowledge about your specific physical and non-physical needs, and
  • better empowerment to address your wellness goals/concerns and have more control over your health & wellbeing.
